No... It's not because you are incompetent. Not because you are lazy. And it's definitely not because you are “behind.”
Your job becomes vulnerable for one simple reason… your role may have been quietly defined by tasks. And tasks are exactly what AI tends to compress and do at warp speed.
The reflex reaction that most professionals have right now is to work harder. Longer hours. Faster turnaround. More output. More hustle. (Along with more worry... more anxiety... more stress...)
That reflex reaction is understandable… and it is also the wrong strategy.
Your protection is not working harder. Your protection is to become more valuable.
Here is the shift that matters, a clean 3-step move that you can do this week. Not next quarter… this week.
Do not overthink it. Write the real work that fills your calendar and your brain.
Examples:
Drafting emails, reports, proposals
Summarizing meetings and documenting action items
Building slide decks
Collecting data and creating updates
Planning projects, timelines, and next steps
Responding to stakeholders, clients, leadership requests
Reviewing work, editing, refining
The point is to get the job out of your head and onto paper where you can see it clearly.
Now go down the list and label the tasks AI can speed up and probably do much faster than you.
Look for:
Drafts (emails, outlines, proposals, scripts)
Summaries (meetings, articles, reports, customer feedback)
Analyses (patterns, comparisons, pros/cons, first-pass insights)
Planning (agendas, timelines, checklists, risk lists, stakeholder maps)
AI does not need to fully “replace” you to reduce the need for your role. It only needs to make your tasks cheaper, faster, and more replicable (without sick days, holidays, overtime...).
That is the danger.
This is where your career security starts to grow.
Take the time you are about to “save” and reinvest it in high-value human work:
Judgment: making decisions with incomplete data, weighing tradeoffs, prioritizing under pressure
Relationships: trust-building, alignment, managing difficult conversations, cross-team influence, using emotional intelligence, resolving conflicts, building relational bridges...
Persuasion: shaping narratives, gaining buy-in, negotiating, presenting with impact
Leadership decisions: coaching, accountability, culture-setting, conflict resolution, strategy execution
AI can generate content. It struggles with context, politics, trust, moral responsibility, and the subtle human realities that make decisions succeed or fail.
So the move is this…
Stop competing on tasks. Start winning on value.
Here's your Change-Proof move: Shift from tasks to value.
Why? Because when your job is defined by tasks, you are replaceable. When your job is defined by outcomes, influence, judgment, and leadership… you become essential.
